Position Overview
The Staff Accountant will work at our corporate office and is responsible for performing the day-to-day accounting for the hospitality overhead platform, as well as supporting the day-to-day accounting for certain hotel assets within the portfolio. Additionally, this position will own the centralized accounts payable process for all hotel assets and the hospitality platform. This is an entry level position in which the ideal candidate has foundational knowledge of and exposure to accounting and financial reporting basics and is looking for the opportunity to gain exposure to hospitality accounting and operations. They will work directly with the Director of Accounting and the Property Level Accounting Teams to ensure all needs are met.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supporting the centralized accounts payable process –
- Interact daily with property teams to understand their needs, research their inquiries, support their requests, and assist with issue resolution
- Monitor, review and verify accounts payable balances for timeliness and accuracy
- Facilitate/execute weekly payment runs, and identify opportunities for increased efficiency
- Provide payment requests for executive approval on regular and ad hoc basis
- Serve as liaison between property teams, vendors, and third-party payment processors as needed
Supporting day-to-day accounting for certain hotel assets within the portfolio as well as for the hospitality overhead platform –
- Perform daily audit and analysis of overnight revenue processing
- Prepare daily journal entries as well as journal entries for recurring transactions on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis (cash movements, payroll, and other departmental/overhead expenses)
- Classify, record, and verify numerical data for all properties, and subsequently analyze recorded data to confirm accuracy and completeness
- Assist with preparation of financial reporting packages to relevant stakeholders
- Understand, interpret and reconcile general ledgers and financial statements and prepare relevant supporting documentation and analyses
Candidate Qualifications and Attributes
Education/Experience
- Degree in Accounting or a related field of study preferred
- 0-3 years’ experience in Accounting (Hospitality experience is helpful but not required)
Technical Skills
- Technologically savvy (e.g., able to learn and use new applications quickly, intermediate to advanced skill with Microsoft Excel)
- Ability to compile, analyze, and utilize complicated and integrated spreadsheets
- Strong quantitative analytical skills, including the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, etc.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Critical thinking capabilities, can interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Commitment to delivering high quality work in a timely manner, which may include working hours that are commensurate with what is necessary to meet expected deliverables
- Knowledge of financial accounting systems (MRI & Microsoft Dynamics a plus)
- Foundational understanding of U.S. GAAP
